Parental role in the language maintenance of Chinese immigrant families in Hamburg
Supervisor: Ingrid Gogolin
The particular interest of the study is in the role of Chinese immigrant parents’ language perspectives and language practices in their children’s Chinese language maintenance in the immigrant families in Hamburg.
This research aims to outline via a standardized means of assessment a more holistic picture of the second or third generation Chinese immigrant children’s proficiency in the Chinese language. Furthermore, it seeks to explore the factors of parental attitudes and actual practices in children’s Chinese proficiency.
This outcome of the research is expected to fill the gap of the research on the less-studied group of Chinese immigrants in Germany, to help to raise Chinese immigrants’ awareness of maintaining the Chinese language and culture. It is also of significance to parents and teachers in Germany who would like to know the factors that influence the students’ Chinese learning.
