We are happy to have you join us on your exchange soon!

After you have been nominated by your home university, you will receive an email from the Erasmus office at the Faculty of Education inviting you to apply online via our student information network STiNE (including step-by-step instructions), as well as information on all the documents required for enrolment.

1. For your provisional enrolment, we require the following documents:

• PDF of your STiNE application summary (‘Printout of online application’).
• Proof of your German language proficiency, demonstrating at least level B1–B2 and not more than two years old (does not apply to native German speakers).

2. Required for your full enrolment:

• Payment of the semester fee: Erasmus+ / SEMP students at the University of Hamburg pay a reduced semester fee. Please do not transfer the semester fee until you have found the ‘OnlineZahlträger’ in your STiNE account under ‘Studium > Dokumente’
• Proof of health insurance (EHIC/GHIC or AT11): To be fully enrolled at the University of Hamburg, you must either be covered by statutory health insurance or be exempt from the obligation to hold German statutory health insurance (e.g. because you hold a European Health Insurance Card ‘EHIC’). Students who do not hold an EHIC/GHIC or AT11 must take out health insurance in Germany.
  Please note: Do not take out travel health insurance, as this is not accepted for enrolment at the University of Hamburg.

Once you have paid the semester fee and provided proof of your health insurance, your semester certificate (enrolment certificate) will be made available in your STiNE account under ‘Studium > Dokumente’.

Please submit your digital Learning Agreement online via EWP.

If your home university does not yet participate in EWP, you can email us your Learning Agreement as a PDF file. We will then forward it to your academic Erasmus+ coordinator for signature and return it to you afterwards.

We do not set any deadlines for the receipt of Learning Agreements; please follow the guidelines set by your home university.

• Click here to access the course catalogue so that you can draw up your Learning Agreement. The new course catalogues are published at the beginning of February for the summer semester and at the beginning of August for the winter semester.
• Important: We would like to expressly point out that the signature of the UHH’s Erasmus+ coordinator on the Learning Agreement does not confirm your eligibility to enrol on individual courses. You must discuss your eligibility for individual courses and the number of ECTS credits to be earned directly with the lecturers.
• Our ECTS overview for the Faculty of Humanities is intended as an initial guide – the ECTS credits awarded for individual courses may differ from this. You must discuss the number of ECTS credits to be earned, the academic work required (e.g. exam, essay, etc.) and whether you can receive a mark for the course personally with the lecturers at the start of the semester.

Exception: Courses taken at the University of Hamburg’s Language Centre have a pre-determined number of ECTS credits (3 or 6 ECTS). You can find the number of credits for each course in the course catalogue on STiNE.

Courses at the Faculty of Education:

It is not possible to register online for courses at the Faculty of Education via STiNE.

Our department will contact you by email before the start of the semester with information on course registration, and you will select your courses before the semester begins.

Courses at other faculties:

If you wish to take courses at other faculties, please enquire in good time with the International Offices or Erasmus Offices of the respective faculty to find out whether, and to what extent, you are permitted to take courses there as an exchange student from the Faculty of Education, and what the registration procedure is. You can find the contact details here. Please note that at most departments within the Faculty of Humanities, introductory courses (e.g. Seminars 1a and language courses) are not open to international visiting students. Please also note the special regulations for the Department of English and American Studies.

It is not possible to take courses at the Faculty of Business Administration or the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences.

Language courses:

An exception is made for language courses offered by the University of Hamburg’s Language Centre. To enrol in these, you must register via STiNE. We will send you further information in good time by email.

The University of Hamburg offers the opportunity to take German courses at various language levels. As an Erasmus+ / SEMP student, you can enrol in both intensive courses before the start of the semester and German courses running throughout the semester. You can find the range of German courses on offer and the registration deadlines here.

Once you have received the hall of residence application (“Housing Application”) from us, please return it, fully completed and signed, to erasmus.ew"AT"uni-hamburg.de by the deadline.

Unfortunately, applications for student accommodation that are incomplete or received after the deadline cannot be considered. We will let you know as soon as possible whether a room is available or whether you will need to find accommodation in Hamburg yourself. Due to the limited number of rooms available, we are unfortunately unable to guarantee that you will be allocated a room in the Studierendenwerk Hamburg halls of residence.

If you do not wish to stay in a student hall of residence, or if we are unable to offer you a room through the hall of residence allocation process, there are some helpful tips on finding accommodation on the private housing market.

If you would like to get in touch with students at the University of Hamburg before you arrive in Hamburg, please feel free to take part in the PIASTA Welcome Buddy Programme. This is an inter-faculty programme in which you will be paired with a student from the University of Hamburg. This buddy will be on hand to support you during your initial orientation at the University of Hamburg.
