In addition to the ongoing exchange programs for students, academic staff, and administrative staff, members of the Faculty of Education carry out a wide range of temporary international projects. These projects cover various areas such as the promotion of early-career researchers, summer schools, and structural initiatives aimed at promoting internationalization.

2025
Together Against Hate on the Internet (Funding period: January-December 2025)
The project, funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), aims to combat online hate speech. In cooperation with colleagues from Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, and Ukraine, tools for conflict resolution and conflict prevention are being developed and tested. Building on previous research, the project focuses on implementing effective prevention and intervention strategies specifically tailored to the needs and challenges of young people.

Tricontinental Teacher Training (Funding period 2020-2024)
The core of the program was a four-week stay at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (USA), the University of Education, Winneba (Ghana), and the University of Hamburg for teaching students.

Navigating the Digital Space: Conflict-Sensitive Support Strategies for Adolescent Refugees
The project “Navigating the Digital Space: Conflict-Sensitive Support Strategies for Adolescent Refugees” addresses the pressing issue of cyberbullying and hate speech—phenomena that create an atmosphere of prejudice and discrimination and, in extreme cases, incite violence. The project, which is carried out in collaboration with partners from Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, and Ukraine, is particularly relevant as it has been shown that children and adolescents in conflict-affected regions are especially vulnerable to the harmful effects of online hate.

Virtual Field Work in the Context of Global Change
V-Global is an Erasmus+ Programme project that promotes the development of digital teaching and learning formats for student teachers within the framework of Education for Sustainable Development (Bildung für Nachhaltige Entwicklung (BNE)). Its aim is to integrate future-oriented topics related to global change into university-based teacher education.

Transnational Service Learning in Contexts of Higher Education
The project “Transnational Service Learning in Contexts of Higher Education” (THE) aimed at familiarising students from the Faculty of Education at the University of Hamburg and the German Jordanian University with the work of NGOs and to encourage them to contribute their own ideas and the expertise they had already acquired during their studies. They were supported through close cross-national collaboration with professors and students from the respective universities.

Next Generation Partnerships
The project aimed at examining institutional structures and processes for dealing with linguistic diversity—within and across different nations. Therefore an international network with several partner universities was established.

Next Generation Literacies Conference
The Executive Committee of the Next Generation Literacies Network invites the submission of abstracts for research related to linguistic diversity and social participation for the network conference, which took place from January 11 to 12, 2024 at the University of Hamburg.

Transcultural Encounters in Spanish Teacher Education
The transnational project “Transcultural Encounters in Spanish Teacher Education,” funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) within the framework of the program “International Virtual Academic Collaborations 3.0” is being developed and implemented in cooperation with the University of Granada (Spain) and the strategic partner university, the University of Groningen (Netherlands).
The aim of the project was to integrate virtual cooperation formats—mostly asynchronous and physical exchange between student teachers from the University of Hamburg and the University of Granada—into the Spanish teacher education curricula at the Faculty of Education at the University of Hamburg and at the Faculty of Education and Sport Sciences at the University of Granada, Campus Melilla.

Next Generation Literacies Summer School 2023
This virtual summer school, organized by the network "Next Generation Literacies", aims to familiarise participants with current research on (multi)literacies development in multilingual contexts and across the educational biography. This year's program runs from August 28th to September 1st and is dedicated to language and literacy development at specific stages: preschool, primary, secondary and tertiary education, as well as transition to the labour market.

Covid, Migrants and Minorities in Teacher Education
Within the framework of the CoMMiTTEd project, "Covid, Migrants and Minorities in Teacher Education. A Fake News Observatory to promote Critical Thinking and Digital Literacy in Times of Crisis", educational resources were developed, tested, and implemented to promote the critical digital literacy of students and future teachers, particularly regarding the engagement with fake news. The project website is available here in five languages and provides links to all developed resources.
2022
Local Linguistic Landscapes for Global Language Education in the School Context
The Erasmus+ Programme project LoCALL, "Local Linguistic Landscapes for Global Language Education in the School Context", was funded between September 1, 2019, and August 31, 2022. The coordinating lead was Prof. Dr. Sílvia Melo-Pfeifer, who, together with colleagues from the University of Groningen, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the University of Aveiro, and the University of Strasbourg, conducts research on approaches to linguistic superdiversity in school-based language education.

Establishment of a Recognition Database
The Recognition Database of the Faculty of Education is intended to facilitate the recognition of academic credits earned during study abroad semesters.
Higher Education Dialogue on Disability and Inclusion
The project “Higher Education Dialogue on Disability and Inclusion” is part of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) programme “Higher Education Dialogue with the Muslim World” which was funded between 2020 and 2022. Academic exchange between a project group at the Faculty of Education, Department 2, at the University of Hamburg and a project group at the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences has been ongoing since 2011.

The four-week programme “Language Diversity – Education and Social Participation” offered by HISS was completed digitally again in 2022.

In this project, teaching students in Germany and Australia jointly conceptualized, tested, and evaluated materials and teaching sequences on multilingualism.

Virtual Excursion Didactics towards Sustainability
In this project, in cooperation with the geography education department of the Université de Paris, topics of sustainable urban development were explored and discussed virtually using the cities of Hamburg and Paris as examples.

Creative Workshops: Storytelling within Transnational University Education
The collaborative project with the German Jordanian University in Amman explored through workshops how universities can become more international during the COVID-19 pandemic and how the transnational university education can be promoted.
