Welcome to Hamburg!

During your stay in Hamburg, you are required to register your residence with the city authorities. After your arrival, you have two weeks to schedule an appointment at one of the City of Hamburg’s customer service centers. You will find more information on Hamburg's service website.

Please send us your Confirmation of Arrival via email to erasmus.ew"AT"uni-hamburg.de after your arrival and please mark the start date of your first course and/or orientation week on that document. We will then return the signed Confirmation of Arrival to you via email as soon as possible. Otherwise you are welcome to visit the Erasmus Office of the Faculty of Education during our office hours to have the document signed in person.

Welcome Meeting at the Faculty

At the beginning of the semester the Erasmus Office of the Faculty of Education invites you to a welcome meeting. This is a great opportunity to meet other incoming students, exchange experiences, and discuss any remaining questions together.

International Welcome Week (PIASTA)

At the beginning of each academic year, i.e. in the winter semester, the PIASTA team (Intercultural Living and Learning) of the International Office invites all new students at the University of Hamburg to participate in the International Welcome Week (IWW).

A diverse program awaits you, offering the chance to get to know Hamburg and the University, as well as providing useful information about studying and living in Hamburg.

Please make sure to observe the registration deadlines.

After submitting your STiNE application overview (“Printout of Online Application”) and proof of health insurance, you will be provisionally enrolled and receive a temporary semester ticket, which is initially valid for one month.

To receive your student ID card and your final semester ticket, you must pay the reduced semester contribution fee applicable to Erasmus+ / SEMP students. Please do not make the payment until you have received the payment request in your STiNE account (under "Studies > Documents > Online Payment Slip").

Once your payment has been received, you will receive your final semester ticket and student ID card, both of which will be valid for the entire semester.

Semester Ticket

The semester ticket (your public transport pass) is provided digitally. It is issued directly by HVV (Hamburg Public Transport Association). Using this link, you can access the ticket portal, where you can generate your digital semester ticket and download it to your smartphone wallet.

The semester ticket is a full Deutschlandticket and is valid nationwide on local public transport and regional trains throughout Germany. For detailed information on the validity of the Deutschlandticket, please refer to the FAQs.

If you would like to extend your studies at the University of Hamburg, please first check with your home university whether an extension of your Erasmus+ stay is possible. If your home university approves the extension, we will also be happy to confirm it on our side.

If an extension under the Erasmus+ programme is not approved by your home university, you may alternatively apply to spend an additional semester at the University of Hamburg as a Free Mover.
