You are cordially invited to the LiDS Lunch Lecture “New Approaches to Language Shift in Indigenous Communities” on January 22, 2026, from 12:15 p.m. to 01:45 p.m. in Room 020 of Von-Melle-Park 8.
New generations of speakers are indispensable for languages to survive. During the UN-designated “Decade of Indigenous Languages” (2022-2032), youth knowledge of Indigenous languages in Papua New Guinea, home to 13% of the world’s languages, has drastically decreased nonetheless. In this LiDS Lunch Lecture, Hannah Sarvasy, Senior Researcher at Western Sydney University (Australia), will outline her team’s innovative approaches to language shift in Papua New Guinea. These approaches might prove fruitful for other linguistically endangered communities as well.
