On 11-12 January 2024, more than 100 scholars and experts from all over the world gathered in the old state library of Hamburg to participate in the Next Generation Literacies (NGL) network conference. NGL has its roots in the strategic partnership between the University of Hamburg, Macquarie University Sydney and Fudan University Shanghai. As part of the faculty research center Literacy in Diversity Settings (LiDS), the NGL network has been funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg as part of the Excellence Strategy of the federal and state governments since January 2021. The network is thus part of Universität Hamburg’s internationalization strategy that aims to promote and build sustainable research-oriented networks with strategic and other international partner institutions.
The conference opened with a symposium dedicated to LiDS research and activities. Following an introduction by LiDS Speaker Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Ingrid Gogolin, Prof. Dr. Anke Grotlüschen and Dr. Klaus Buddeberg presented their research findings on the topic of artificial intelligence in adult education, followed by a presentation by LiDS Co-Speaker Prof. Dr. Barbara Hänel-Faulhaber and Viktor Werner on the acquisition of sign-language skills. In addition, LiDS members Dr. Birger Schnoor and Dr. Irina Usanova presented their work on the writing skills of multilingual adolescents, and Kseniia Pershina highlighted the effects of multilingualism for immigrant nurses; in poster presentations, Nora Dünkel depicted the research field of language education in Germany as immigration society, while Anouk Ticheloven presented her research on multilingual skills and well-being in adolescents.
