Diversity Contexts in Teacher Education (DiCoT)
Orientation Internship Abroad

The Bachelor’s degree programmes in teacher training include a four-week orientation placement at the end of the third semester. The DiCoT programme offers students the opportunity to undertake this placement abroad. To support this, preparatory seminars focusing on the topics of diversity and anti-bias are offered. In addition, students take part in a one-day preparatory workshop and a one-day reflection workshop following their stay abroad.

DiCoT (Diversity Contexts in Teacher Education) was originally developed as a joint initiative between the Faculty of Education and the Centre for Teacher Education in Hamburg, and has been continued and further developed since January 2025 as part of the new DAAD-funded INTER project.
DiCoT aims to internationalise the orientation placement module in teacher training programmes by combining placements abroad with internationalisation@Home.
Übersicht
As part of the DiCoT programme, teacher training students have the opportunity to complete the introductory placement required as part of their degree at a school abroad. The placement takes place annually in February/March and is structured similarly to the introductory placement in Germany. The stay abroad is accompanied by preparatory and follow-up work. Key components include accompanying seminars and workshop formats designed to support students before and after the placement.
Fundamental to the content of this work is the diversity approach, which moves beyond a simplistic understanding of cultural identity and focuses on the various lines of difference relevant to educational contexts. A group of university lecturers from the faculty received training in the anti-bias approach as part of the project. Building on this, an innovative concept was developed and institutionalised for the preparatory seminar for trainee teachers included in the module. The seminars raise students’ awareness of bias, stereotyping, discrimination and inhuman attitudes such as racism.
To facilitate the placement abroad and to offer students further international locations for their placement, the existing network of partner universities is being expanded. The placement at a school abroad offers students the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of diversity in a school setting, to reflect on this experience using an anti-bias approach, and thereby to develop professional reflective skills.

Accompanying research
The project was supported by academic research based on a qualitative-reconstructive approach. Project members gave presentations on this accompanying research at the 19th IMISCOE Annual Conference, “Migration and Time: Temporalities of Mobility, Governance and Resistance”, and at the DGfE conference of the “School Research and Didactics” commission. Reports on both presentations can be found here.
Establishment of an Alumni:ae Network
With a view to promoting cross-phase internationalisation in teacher education, an alumni:ae network was established during the project period. The aim is to maintain alumni interest in the themes of internationality and interculturality and to highlight opportunities for them to apply these in their professional practice.
Teacher training students can apply for the DAAD’s Lehramt.International scholarship for placements lasting six weeks or longer.
The placement abroad with DiCoT is recognised as an orientation placement within the Bachelor’s degree programmes in teacher training. Furthermore, the placement is recognised as a compulsory period of study abroad, which is a requirement of teacher training programmes involving foreign languages.
