We are pleased to announce the release of a rich mixed methods dataset from the doctoral research of Abdullah Atmacasoy, who conducted this work as a visiting researcher at the DivER and LIDS Research Center at the University of Hamburg. The research was supervised by Prof. Ingrid Gogolin (University of Hamburg) and Prof. Hanife Akar (Middle East Technical University).
The study investigates how destination language support is organized for newly arrived students in monolingual school contexts, using Istanbul and Hamburg as illustrative cases.
The dataset includes:
- Qualitative data: Over 60 interviews with students, teachers, school administrators, parents, and key informants, along with 33 hours of classroom observation notes.
- Quantitative data: Survey responses from 434 newly arrived students, with variables on language proficiency, migration background, family environment, and classroom context.
Grounded in Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory, the study adopts a four-phase mixed methods design focusing on lower-secondary students’ educational experiences.
The dataset is openly available for reuse and reanalysis. Researchers, educators, and policymakers are encouraged to explore the data and full documentation here: Link
