Online Presentation on Life in a New Language by LiDS-Speaker Prof. Ingrid Piller on March 02, 2026, from 09:30 – 11:00 am (CET)

Global migration and social diversity are among the key challenges of the 21st century. While there is much talk about migration, the lived experiences and challenges of migrants are rarely discussed. As part of EUTOPIA Languages Week 2026, LiDS speaker Prof. Ingrid Piller will give a lecture on Life in a New Language. Based on the equally titled book by her and other authors (Link), Ingrid Piller will discuss migration experiences and language learning. The book examines 130 migrants in Australia from 34 different countries over a period of 20 years. This study was made possible by the sharing of ethnographic data. Ingrid Piller will also reflect on the challenges of ethnographic data sharing in her lecture.
