LiDS Lunch Lecture "The Text Complexity of German Children's Books at the Word Level" on May 04, 2026, from 12:15 pm to 01:45 pm in room 213, Von-Melle-Park 8
German children’s books are used to support literacy in second language learners of German in North America. But what makes children’s books truly readable? In this LiDS Lunch Lecture, Dr. Roswita Dressler (University of Calgary) and Dr. Bernd Nuss (University of Calgary/ Charlotte) share insights into their current research on the text complexity of German children’s books. Their analyses are based on a corpus of 602 German children’s books, and in this session they will focus on decodability at the word level (lexis). These findings shed light on the text complexity of German children’s books at the word level to inform future research into literacy in this context.
