Project description:
This project investigates requirements and developmental needs for diversity-sensitive teaching and learning of mathematics. The underlying aim is to generate approaches for shaping a diversity-sensitive mathematics classroom that reflexively takes into account practices of non-attribution of social non-belongings, fosters the establishment of commonality among pupils with an awareness of practices of difference, and enables all pupils to participate in mathematical learning processes. In the long term, this is intended to contribute to reducing social disadvantage in mathematics teaching.
The project combines mathematics-education and difference-theoretical research approaches. This interdisciplinary perspective makes it possible to grasp injustice in mathematics learning, both empirically and theoretically, as a consequence of social inequality and the ascription of social status (Viermann, 2022). (Re-)productions of social difference constructions in inclusive mathematics teaching, as well as related practices of hegemony, can thus be elaborated and reflected upon. One focus of the project lies on bringing together difference-theoretical and mathematics-education discourses. On the one hand, current (research) work on dealing with difference as a tension within inclusive mathematical education from mathematics education and educational science is being collected in an edited volume. On the other hand, an interactionist perspective on mathematics learning is being linked with difference-theoretical considerations in order to provide a theoretical foundation for diversity-sensitive teaching and learning of mathematics.
A second focus lies on the analysis of teaching practices in the context of mathematics support measures and on the reconstruction of the difference attributions inherent in them (e.g. Viermann & Schütte, 2023; Viermann & Ehrenberg, 2023).
