Linguistic Diversity and Education in Canada
While Canada is considered to be a multicultural society, its education system is not without its challenges with regards to multilingualism. In urban centres, where the majority of immigration is concentrated, the multilingualism of children in schools is seen as an individual and societal resource, primarily in an economic sense. However, the ways in which these resources are supported and developed differs by school context. In this talk, I explore three Canadian educational contexts: Immersion programs for official languages, bilingual programs for heritage languages and mainstream programs where English is the only language of instruction. I will describe the instructional approach, as well as the strengths and challenges of each.
